Our calf has two muscles, which are the gastrocnemius and soleus. A tennis leg happens when the medial head of the gastrocnemius is torn and does not involve the Achilles tendon. This kind of injury occurs due to sudden and repetitive movements and causing strain on the leg. Tennis leg is a common injury in older athletes, around 35-50 years of age.
A qualified chiropractor can treat torn calf muscle or tendon /tennis leg. The quicker you get it healed, the shorter the recovery time and surgery might not be needed.
If there is no chiropractor nearby, we would recommend you to apply ice immediately, strap it and raise your leg above your heart level. In the meantime, please do use a crutch and try to avoid walking on your legs until you see a chiropractor or other health professional.
Healing time varies for each individual. However, with an appropriate and efficient treatment by your chiropractor, you should be getting back on track within 4 to 6 weeks’ time.
It is recommended that a minimum of 10 minutes of stretching and cardio is done before your workouts. It is crucial to do warm ups before starting your workouts and exercises to prevent future injury. This is to make sure that all your muscles are well stretched and has good blood flow before doing any intense activities.
What our chiropractors do at Lakeside chiropractic to speed up healing of calf injuries is, soft tissue work, electrotherapy, low level laser, joint mobilisation, strapping and specific exercises.
