Slipped Disc/Disc Bulge

Slipped Disc/Disc Bulge

You may have heard of someone complaining of a slipped disc/disc bulge before, but what exactly are these entities that seem to cause people so much grief? Well a Slipped disc/disc bulge is a herniated intervertebral disc. These discs sit in between each vertebra and help provide cushioned support and dispersion of force throughout the spine. When a disc undergoes excessive load for whatever reason, the tough outer fibers may tear partially or completely allowing the jelly like inner portion of the disc to move outward. This tear can cause pain on its own or can cause compression and or inflammation of the nearby nerves. Irritation of nerve roots can result in symptoms such as pins and needles sensations, numbness and even muscle weakness. The surrounding muscles may also go into spasm to act as a protective mechanism, further perpetuating you discomfort. Although often time’s minor tears can be asymptomatic meaning that you do not feel any pain or discomfort and are able to continue life unaffected.

The typical treatment for a slipped disc/disc bulge is typically passive manual care combined with functional musculoskeletal rehabilitation both of which are provided by the Chiropractors at Lakeside Chiropractic. In severe cases surgery may be considered.
